The Most Important Kitchen Tool...and a Giveaway

Have you heard of Wusthof Knives before?  I have envied their knives for a long time now and longed to get my hands on one.  Recently, they gifted me with one of their beautiful Classic Santoku knives so I could do a product review.  Ever since opening it I have been in knife heaven.  This knife is seriously amazing.

I've had good knives before, but this is the mother of them all.  I can't imagine what their other knives can do. One of the best parts about Wusthof is their warranty.  Behind every good knife is a warranty.  They also have great sharpeners to help keep your knife in tip top condition.  Go to their website for more information about all of their products.  For this review I put together a few different foods, that to me, need good knives if you are going to cut them up the right way.  It really is true -- a knife is the most important kitchen tool.   Are you ready to get chopping and slicing?  Let's begin.

The knife looked so good in the box when it arrived, that I just had to take a picture.

 Doesn't it look powerful?

First up, cutting fresh mozzarella cheese.  If you do not have a good sharp knife for this, you might as well rip the cheese apart with your bare hands. The beauty of this knife is in the hollow edge which creates pockets of air to prevent extra thin or soft slices from sticking to the blade.  Fresh mozzarella cheese has finally found it's match.

The knife really does glide through the cheese.

No sawing, or extra hard pushing to get the cheese to cut.

Just for kicks, I used the knife to cut a tomato. Normally, I use a serrated knife, but I thought I would give this a try.  Perfecto!

I made a homemade pizza using this recipe for crust.  I place the fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced turkey bacon (with the help of my new knife, of course), fresh tomato, crackled pepper and Parmesan.

Next up, the onion.  With the right knife, cutting an onion will not be the dreaded kitchen chore anymore.  Just watch.

I love this knife so much, I cried when I was done.  The onions might have helped me out a little.  Okay, bad joke.  On with the next...

Meet a fresh pineapple.  These are SO much better than cracking open a can of them.  Oh, and having a good knife helps too.

No sawing to cut through the skin of this baby.  Just a gently push down and away it goes.

Be sure to cut off the hard middle core.

 Slice off the hard skin.

 It's really that easy.

Once you have the skin and core cut off, it's time to slice all of the wedges up.

Thank you knife, for making my life easier.

 Last, the all mighty watermelon.

I cut through that baby watermelon in the blink of an eye.

See how clean that cut is?

  1. I don't want to be comment number one, but whatever, I'll just bite the bullet.

I want this knife so bad it hurts. It would change my life in that I would cut down on cutting time....no pun intended!

  2. I have never owned a good knife and have always wanted one. It would help me eat healthier since the healthiest food seems to be the hardest to cut (like sweet potatoes and squash before they are cooked of course).

  3. I have never owned a super nice knife like this, but would love to! I would love to cut and dice things muscle free! :)

  4. We LOVE Wusthof in our kitchen! For our wedding, we got the serrated tomato knife, but we literally use it every day. Their knives stay sharp for so long and hold up to just about anything. this would be a great addition to our kitchen!

  5. I would love to win this knife! I just have cheap knives we got for our wedding. I would love a good multi-purpose knife! It would definitely cut down on prep time! =)

  6. I have never owned a good knife. I bought a knife that "looks" like this from... Walmart... and just that small improvement helped so much with my kitchen life.
So to have a REAL one - that would just be the epitomy of kitchen perfection!

  7. no fancy knives in my kitchen...yet! i've heard a dull knife is much more dangerous than a sharp one. i'm still working on my knife skills and i believe this knife would change my life by preventing any (more) kitchen injuries :)

  8. Somehow I am always cursed with the worst knives on the planet! This knife would be heaven on earth in the kitchen. Besides, Saturday is my birthday! :)

  9. I personally don't own ANY knives! And the worst part.. my roommate is moving out in August. I have NO idea what I'm going to cut with. Well I guess I should say I HAD no idea... now I know... I want THIS knife! :)

  11. Can I enter for someone else? My parents are still using the kitchen knives they got for their wedding... 26 years ago! For Christmas last year I bought my dad a really nice kitchen utility knife and he just loves it. I would absolutely love to win this for him. He loves to cook but I know that having a great knife like this would make it even more enjoyable. It is time for my parents to get rid of their 26 year old knives with the wooden handles and own some really great kitchen tools!

  15. ok, #1 i have NO experience with Wusthof's knives thus far, therefore #2 having one of their knives would more than revolutionize me in the kitchen setting. cutting ANYTHING is one of my least fave things to do in cooking...so i tend to bake more...well i did, until all my allergies. a wusthof knife would be helpful in rehabilitating me with recipes i can eat AND enjoy since cutting would be a breeze! keep me in mind, please.

  16. I think my parents have one of these knives. They swear by German knifes and will only buy them. As a note of how skilled they are, I dropped one on my foot and it sliced through the tendon! got some power there!

  17. I love Wusthof knives! I have a Wusthof chef's knife and a paring knife. I love them both and use them pretty much everyday. And I have a sharpener, which I also love. But I don't have a Santuko! I could give it a good home.

  23. My knives are J.A. Henckels, supposedly really good, but they are getting super dull, even though I sharpen them regularly! I don't truly believe there is a "perfect" knife out there. I would like to be proven wrong :-)

  24. Okay, I first thought, "How dumb to have a post on what your knife can do," but I have to admit, by the end I WANTED one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have never owned any of their products, but I am always looking for a good, multi-purpose knife. I am always trying to hone (ooooh so sorry for the pun!) my knife skills.

  26. Knives like this are why I have never invested in Cutco. I know these are the choice of chefs. I have never owned one, but would absolutely love to. I sure hope I win this. It would be one of the best birthday presents I could EVER receive, on June 4th. I will be waiting anxiously.:) By the way, I will be 46 on 6/4 and I was born in '64. Doesn't that make me worthy to be the winner?

  27. I have been looking for a good knife, so perfect, a good recommendation! It takes me, I'm sure, 3 times the normal chopping time with my sad pitiful Target knives (I still love you Target) that we got when we got married. My mom laughs everytime she comes to visit and has to use one of them! A good knife would be great!

  28. I have been trying to get into the habit of cooking healthier things for my sweet family but it is always hard when you don't have the right tools (and are in the middle of a move). I think that this would help me in this endeavor.

  30. I've never used one of these knives, but if that knife is as good as you say it is, WOW!! That would seriously help me out in the kitchen! I have such a hard time cutting tomatoes... I think those are the hardest thing for me!

  31. It took almost eight years before I got some decent knives in my kitchen...and they are Wusthof! I actually own this exact knife. I love it, for all the exact reasons you just posted! I also have the meat knife and a paring knife. But just for kicks--I'll enter! Daishan

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have never used that brand of knife and the one I am cutting with now came from my mom's great aunt's house. Little rusty and I cut my fingers quite a bit because the knife slips a lot. So bad of me!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have only ever used on Wusthof knife, and I could simply that by saying......I only use one knife! In my whole house the rest of the knives are useless. I wish I could own a set. I guess here is my attempt at the "one at a time" approach!

    ReplyDelete
  37. we eat watermelon GALORE at our house during the summer! i would LOVE to try that knife on one!

  39. What can I say? I need a grown-up knife. I have to switch back and forth between my knives, I have one good serrated knife, the rest are just sad steak knives from the block set I've had for years.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Girl that pizza looked awesome! I too have envied Wustof knives for years. My husband and I drool over them when we go to Bed Bath and Beyond. This could replace the 10 dull knives I have in my drawer.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I envision my three boys sitting at the counter watching in amazment as I slice and dice fruit. I would be a changed woman to own this knife. This would mean no more microwaved hot dogs or chicken nuggets. I would be able to cut through a watermelon. Whip my way through cutting a pineapple. Oh the possibilities seem endless. Please pick me!

Can't believe it cuts tomatoes without a serrated edge! Good Post Candace! Your fruit and pizza pictures have all of us fired up. We all wanna win!

  45. I just don't want...I NEED!

I have one of those knife drawers that if one doesn't work, you start digging for another! I've dirtied all my knifes in one cooking experience before! It's pretty sad. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I almost cried when I saw the pictures of what this baby can do! I got a really cheap set of knives to take with me to college and have been using the same ones ever since.
I can't even imagine what it would be like to dice up an onion so finely!

  59. In my kitchen, good utensils have their own identity as they are just that important in my house. We'll call this one Wustie for short. Wustie deserves a good home, and I can give him just that.

    1) Wustie will have plenty of exercise, as a good knife can be used to cut EVERYTHING. Slicing and dicing is so fun when the knife actually works!

    2) Wustie will be properly cleaned and maintained; hand-washing and towel-drying only for this precious metal. Professional sharpening done yearly to maintain that wonderfully sharp blade.

    3) Wustie will be safely tucked in every night into his own little bed, complete with a little blankie and maybe even a goodnight kiss. :)

If I were to win this knife I would use it for all the same things you did in this post, and I would use it to speed things up a bit in our kitchen. I really should have registered for something like this 5 years ago when I got married...but if I win this I'd be ever-so-pleased! :)

  70. How would a Wustof change my life? I equate it to how marrying brad pitt would impact the beauty of my children.
    no. really.
All I want in this world is my watermelon to look like your watermelon. With this knife that could be possible.
